What is the Discover Scuba Diving Experience?
The PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience is an exciting introduction to scuba diving for those curious about exploring underwater without committing to full certification. Participants are first taught the essential safety guidelines required to dive under the supervision of a PADI instructor. We then practice some basic skills in very shallow water before jumping on the boat to go dive on the reef. This memorable adventure may spark a lifelong passion for diving, with no prior experience needed, making it ideal for anyone eager to take their first plunge.
Why take the DSD with Salty Boogers?
We are serious educators and are flexible to operate on your schedule. We offer private courses that are tailored to each individual or small group. This allows us to accommodate last minute changes or individual challenges. We also provide mixed level training for groups with divers of different experience levels, perfect for families and friends.
How much does it cost?
$120 USD including the equipment rental and all required materials. An optional E-learning course is available for $10 if you would like to prepare in advance. This would help you feel more comfortable to start and includes any required paperwork so we can get in the water as soon as possible. Highly recommended for divers visiting off a cruise ship. We accept payments in Dollars, Lempiras, Venmo, Paypal, and major cryptocurrencies.
What will we do in the DSD experience?
During the DSD, participants will be guided by our certified instructor as they learn basic scuba diving skills in a controlled and safe environment. The experience begins with a short briefing on essential diving techniques, safety protocols, and the equipment we use. Once everyone is comfortable, we will put on the scuba gear and simply walk from the beach into the crystal-clear waters. Students will practice clearing water from their mask and regulator, and then practice a short swim in the shallow water. Once you are comfortable in the shallow water, we will get on the boat and conduct a shallow dive out on the reef. This exhilarating adventure allows divers to experience the thrill of weightlessness, navigate through fascinating coral reefs, and witness Roatan's underwater ecosystem up close.
What will we see underwater?
While we cannot control where our ocean friends will be each day, our experienced guides will do their best to find you some of Roatan's incredible underwater residents. On an open water dive, we are guaranteed to see the incredible reef system, beautiful reef fish of every color, and hopefully get a view of the dramatic "wall" of coral wrapping the entire island. In the West End of Roatan, the three biggest creatures we are likely to see on an average dive are the fascinating turtles, the creepy moray eels, or the majestic eagle rays.

Frequently Asked Questions
I feel pretty nervous, what should I do?
Trust us! We were all nervous the first time diving! At Salty Boogers, we have unlimited freedom to take it slow and make sure you are comfortable. There is no rush and no pressure. We want you to have a fun time and experience scuba diving at your own pace.
Will I earn a certification to dive again?
You will NOT earn a certification after completing only the DSD experience. You ARE welcome to come dive with us again within one week and we can skip the practice sessions and get right out diving on the reef. This is an excellent way to gain experience if you are not quite ready to get certified or you are limited on time.
How can I credit this toward my certification?
It is possible to earn credit for the first day of your Open Water Diver certification. To do this, you would need to learn a few extra skills in the shallow water near the beach and then demonstrate a small number of skills out on a real dive. This is a little extra work compared to a normal DSD, but you would earn credit towards your certification course. You could then either finish the course with us, or we could give you a referral form that is valid for 12 months to continue the course with any other PADI dive instructor.
Another excellent option is to complete the PADI Scuba Diver certification. This requires less time to complete than to Open Water Diver course, but you do earn a lifetime certification as a Scuba Diver. To earn this certification you would have to complete three chapters of the PADI E-Learning and come back for one more day of diving. You could then upgrade to the full Open Water Diver certification at any point in the future.
How deep will we go?
We will only go as deep as you are comfortable!
The maximum depth for confined water training is 10-20 feet.
The maximum depth for the open water dive is 20-40 feet.
Whats should I bring?
Just bring a good attitude and the willingness to learn! We recommend wearing your bathing suit under a t-shirt in the morning and bringing a rash guard or quick-dry shirt to wear into the water. Consider bringing a water bottle, snack, towel and change of clothes.
Where will we do the course?
The introduction and safety briefing will be conducted right on the beach in West End, Roatan. We will then conduct a short training dive in the shallow waters right at the edge of the beach. After making sure everyone is feeling comfortable and confident, we will take a very short boat ride to one of Roatan's shallow dive sites on the Mesoamerican reef.
